SoundSwitch | Getting Started with Rekordbox

SoundSwitch 2.11 officially integrates with Rekordbox, connecting through Rekordbox's built in Lighting extension. This article introduces the integration, walks you through connecting SoundSwitch with Rekordbox, and covers common troubleshooting steps.

What is the Rekordbox Integration?

SoundSwitch now officially integrates with Rekordbox, giving Rekordbox DJs full access to the SoundSwitch feature set for the first time. Create custom light shows for your tracks directly within Rekordbox, or let SoundSwitch's Autoscript feature automatically analyze your tracks and playlists and generate light shows for you.

Requirements

• A Rekordbox Creative or Professional plan. New to Rekordbox? The integration is also available during Rekordbox's 30 day free trial
• SoundSwitch installed, with your fixtures already patched (see: Getting Started in Edit Mode)
• A supported SoundSwitch DMX interface: Control One, the SoundSwitch Micro DMX Interface, or a supported third party interface
• A DJ controller supported by Rekordbox. Any controller Rekordbox itself supports will work, since SoundSwitch communicates with Rekordbox directly rather than with the controller

Setting Up SoundSwitch with Rekordbox

Step 1: Set Your Library to Rekordbox

Open SoundSwitch and, in Edit Mode, head to Preferences, General, and under the Input heading set this to Rekordbox. This lets SoundSwitch read your Rekordbox library. Once set, your Rekordbox library appears directly inside SoundSwitch, where you can create custom light shows for your tracks, or use Autoscript to generate them automatically.

Step 2: Switch to Performance Mode

Once your library is set and your fixtures are patched, switch SoundSwitch from Edit Mode to Performance Mode and select your venue. SoundSwitch is now ready to connect with Rekordbox.

Step 3: Enable SoundSwitch Inside Rekordbox

In Rekordbox, open Preferences, then go to Extensions, Lighting. Turn on the Lighting Function toggle, then enable SoundSwitch underneath it. This starts the connection between SoundSwitch and Rekordbox. A successful connection is confirmed by the connection indicator inside SoundSwitch.

Note: this only needs to be enabled once, you won't need to repeat this step for future sessions.

Step 4: Connect Your Hardware

Connect your supported SoundSwitch DMX interface, such as the Control One, to the computer running SoundSwitch, then connect your DMX cables to your fixtures.

Connect your DJ controller as you normally would for Rekordbox. Any controller supported by Rekordbox works here, since SoundSwitch communicates with Rekordbox directly rather than with the controller itself.

If you're using SoundSwitch supported smart fixtures, such as Philips Hue or Nanoleaf, a DMX interface isn't required, these connect over Wi-Fi and are configured directly in the SoundSwitch preferences.

Step 5: Test Your Connection

Load a track to a deck in Rekordbox and raise the upfader. Your fixtures should respond immediately, confirming the connection is working. Hit play, and SoundSwitch plays back your light show in sync, whether it was built manually or generated using Autoscript.

Performance Preferences

SoundSwitch blends your light show between decks the same way your audio blends, using your fader positions. If you'd like to fine tune this to match your mixing style, SoundSwitch includes several fader preferences:

• Three crossfader speed options, useful for DJs who scratch or cut
• An Upfader Only option, which ignores the crossfader entirely and blends based on the upfaders alone
• The defaults work well for most users, this is only necessary if you'd like to customize further.

Troubleshooting

If SoundSwitch and Rekordbox aren't connecting, work through the following steps:

1. Confirm SoundSwitch is in Performance Mode, with your library set to Rekordbox, and the correct venue selected
2. In Rekordbox, confirm the Lighting Function toggle is enabled under Extensions, Lighting, and that SoundSwitch is enabled underneath it
3. Confirm you're on a Rekordbox Creative or Professional plan, or an active 30 day free trial. The integration does not work on Rekordbox's Core plan
4. Make sure both SoundSwitch and Rekordbox are fully up to date
5. Restart both SoundSwitch and Rekordbox, then reload your track
6. A successful connection is indicated by a green connection status indicator inside SoundSwitch

If lighting isn't syncing correctly during playback, or fixtures aren't responding to Performance Overrides:

• Confirm your DMX interface is connected and shown as connected in SoundSwitch
• Confirm your fixtures are correctly patched in Edit Mode and respond correctly during a scripted or Autoscripted track in Edit Mode, before troubleshooting further in Performance Mode
